What is Got Your Back San Diego?

Got Your Back San Diego is a 100% community-funded, volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides weekend food bags to children in local schools who are at risk of hunger. Each bag contains six nutritious meals and a simple nutrition lesson to help children make healthy food choices.

What kinds of food are included?

Each bag includes kid-friendly, non-perishable, nutritious items such as pasta, canned meats and veggies, oatmeal, fruit cups, and several healthy snacks. All items are chosen for nutritional value, ease of preparation, and child appeal. Each bag also contains an interactive homework assignment to help teach children about nutrition and making healthy food choices.

Who receives the food?

The program serves kindergarten through 5th-grade children in San Diego County Schools who have been identified by school staff as food-insecure — meaning they lack a reliable food source.

Where does the food come from?

Some of the food is donated by private individuals and by food drives organized by local community partners, such as churches, businesses, and social organizations, who share our commitment to fighting childhood hunger. Some food items are purchased from retail stores, and some from the same food banks that supply school lunch programs.

How do schools participate?

Participating schools submit the number of children in need they have. Then, every week, Got Your Back San Diego delivers a bag of nutritious food, enough to last each child through the entire weekend.
